Does my dog have separation anxiety?

Ask yourself these questions…

  • Does my dog bark, whine or howl excessively when I’m not home?

  • Is my dog destructive when left home alone?

  • Does my dog pace, pant, seem restless, or can’t seem to settle down when left home alone?

  • Does my dog have potty accidents when they’re at home alone?

  • Has my dog ever scratched at the doors or windows or tried to escape when they were home alone?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, your dog may be suffering from separation anxiety.

FAQs

  • There are several behavioral signs that may indicate separation anxiety, including vocalizing (barking, howling, whining), destructive behavior, urinating or defecating when left alone, pacing, panting, drooling, excessive grooming or scratching, and attempts to escape or damage doorways or windows. However, these behaviors can also be caused by other issues. During our initial meeting, we’ll discuss your dog’s behavior in detail, and I’ll observe their alone-time behavior to identify the root cause and determine if separation anxiety training is needed.

  • Unfortunately, probably not. Anxiety often worsens with each experience of alone time, rather than improving. In rare cases, it may be worth giving your dog some time to see if they can adjust on their own (and I can help you assess if that’s the case for your dog). However, for most dogs, the sooner you start an intervention, the better the outcome will be.

  • I strongly discourage using any anti-bark device (including shock, vibrate, beeping, ultrasonic, and citronella collars). While it may stop the barking, it doesn’t address the root cause of the anxiety and could even make the problem worse. Barking is a symptom of the distress your dog feels when alone. By focusing on resolving the anxiety, we’ll help your dog feel better, and as their anxiety improves, the symptoms, including barking, will also subside.

  • Crate training can be a valuable skill for many dogs, but for some, it can increase anxiety. In those cases, a larger space, like a gated room or playpen, may be a better option. When we start training together, I’ll observe your dog’s behavior and work with you to evaluate what’s best for your dog, your goals, and your living situation to determine the most effective approach.

  • Training a dog with separation anxiety is a deeply individual process, and the timeline can vary significantly from dog to dog. Many dogs make progress within a few weeks, but full resolution may take longer.

Every dog is unique and it’s important that they set the pace of the training for the best results. Effective training focuses on gradual steps, ensuring that your dog feels safe and comfortable throughout the process. By moving at a pace that feels right for them, we help build your dog’s confidence and trust, which is the foundation for lasting success.

  • Nope! Virtual training is not only effective but often the best option for separation anxiety. The goal is to simulate real-life departures, and if I were there in person, your dog might recognize the training isn't realistic, which could limit its effectiveness. Virtual sessions allow us to create more authentic scenarios for better results.

  • We turned to Cori in a real moment of need with a very sweet but troubled foster dog who had severe separation anxiety and was scared of all males. Cori really understood how we were feeling and designed a full training plan for us.

  • Cori has been a tremendous help in getting our adopted pup the training he needs for his separation anxiety. Cori is always available for any questions or concerns you might have at any time. If you are skeptical about virtual training (like we were) you will be in good hands with Cori.
